China's New Silk Road: One Belt, One Road Strategy
China’s big international achievement over the past year and a half is its new One Belt, One Road strategy, popular called the New Silk Road Economic Belt. Combined with the nation’s other big ambitious project, a 21st Century Maritime Silk Road which connects China with Southeast Asia, Africa and Europe, this new vision is a major development in outward diplomacy and represents an opportunity to expand Chinese infl¬uence while also showcasing Beijing’s softer side.
As envisioned by Beijing, the New Silk Road Economic Belt and Road will comprise two distinct transportation corridors: a land route that connects Xi’an in West China to Duisburg, Germany and Rotterdam, Netherlands in Europe by way of Central Asia; and a sea route that connects South China to Africa and Europe by way of Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India. Both routes present challenge and opportunities for China, with political instability, limited existent infrastructure and corruption all presenting issues.
The European Chamber is delighted to welcome Mr. Chris Devonshire-Ellis, Founder of Dezan Shira & Associates, to present the New Silk Road Economic Belt and its impact on European businesses in China.
